James Longfield was born 14 pounds with light green eyes and a healthy attitude. His parents were only in grief about his foot that did not move. The midwife, was not careful enough. His mother smiled upon this blessing and was happy with what she received, the father disappointed with a crippled child.
His farmer, a minor farmer in the lands around Caer Darrow was never a special or noble person, minding his own business and tending his farm. Selling the surplus and feeding his family, living relatively comfortably. Nobody special, but not hungry beggars. During the interwar years it was relatively peaceful, and the times were prosperous. The Kingdom of Lordaeron growing steadily alongside Alterac and Stromgarde, trade prospered and the need for food and crops increased as the populations of the city's rose.
In his youth he never left his house much, except for walks to the hill now known as "Sorrow Hill". A beautiful and lush garden of vegetation this used to be a popular attraction for leisure goers and lovers. Learning to walk and learning simple words was nothing hard for this child, as he grew so did his strength, yet his foot remained limp.
When he first attended a monk run education "class" he was made fun of and called a cripple. Coming home with tears streaming down his face his father raised his hand at him the first time that day, telling him to be strong and never take heed of what other people say. That each man was only struck once with misfortune and that his time would come.
So James took the insults, the abuse, the bullying, but he grew strong. His father took him out when he was only fourteen and taught him to use a bow.
As his muscles hardened and his mind grew colder, his spirit increased as did his understanding of the world around him. His father taught him never to trust anybody but his own, to follow his reactions and instincts, guided by his father he was taught how to use a staff for self-defense. He put this training to use against wolves.
When he was only seventeen his father sold his farm and purchased a herd of sheep, James became a shepherd and his training came in handy, the bow at his side for enjoyment and the staff to protect the herd from thieves, bandits and other vandals.
One night he watched the starry sky and thought about what his father had said that day he came home crying,
It reminded him of his fathers words, sounded like a prophecy. Thinking deeply he was caught off by a voice, weak in the night he stood up and brushed the dirt off his pants. Picking up his staff he approached slowly not rustling the leaves. He hid behind a tree and listened to the voice again, peeking out he saw a girl on the floor and four lads around his age around her. Ripping at her clothes, the expression on their faces described everything.
Standing there, taking a deep breath he lunged out, using the staff to support his good foot he worked fast and careless of how he damaged these lads, breaking noses and snapping hands the four people were soon on the floor and James breathing heavily looking around him, amazed with his own ferocity and capability.
Looking at the girl on the ground, a blush crept up his neck as he looked at her, quickly looking away he stood there and waited for her to stand up, somewhat embarrassed.
As she stood up he could smell her washed hair, her essence. It seems that the young and impressionable James Longfield had fallen in love. He hadn't seen this day coming at all.
